Zinc Picolinate vs Gluconate: Which Form Should You Take?

Quick answer

Both raise zinc levels. In one small 1987 study, zinc picolinate increased some zinc measures more than gluconate or citrate, and it's a popular capsule form. Zinc gluconate is inexpensive, widely studied and the usual form in cold lozenges. The difference for most people is small; the elemental dose and staying under 40 mg a day matter more.

Every zinc supplement uses zinc bound to another molecule. Picolinate and gluconate are two of the most common. Here's how zinc picolinate vs gluconate stacks up.

Side-by-side

Zinc picolinate Zinc gluconate
Bound to Picolinic acid Gluconic acid
Elemental zinc by weight About 20% About 14%
Absorption evidence Better in one small 1987 study Good; widely studied
Common format Capsules Tablets and cold lozenges
Cost Moderate Low

What the research shows

In a small crossover study of 15 adults, picolinate raised zinc in hair, urine and red blood cells more than citrate or gluconate over four weeks, while blood serum zinc didn't differ. That's the main evidence behind picolinate's reputation. It hasn't been widely replicated.

The NIH notes that gluconate, citrate and picolinate are all reasonably absorbed, while zinc oxide is absorbed less well.

How to choose

  • Daily capsule: picolinate or gluconate are both fine; pick by price and tolerance.
  • Cold lozenges: acetate or gluconate.
  • Sensitive stomach: take any form with a light meal.

Dosing reminders

Check elemental zinc on the label and keep your total intake at or below 40 mg a day. Long-term high doses cause copper deficiency. Details are in can you take zinc every day.

The verdict

Picolinate has a slight edge in limited research and is a good capsule choice; gluconate is cheap, proven and the standard for lozenges. The dose matters more than the form. Learn more in our zinc guide.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 'zinc' and 'zinc picolinate'?

'Zinc' on a label always comes bound to something, such as picolinate, gluconate, citrate or oxide. Picolinate is one of these forms.

Which zinc is best for colds?

Lozenges with zinc acetate or gluconate, started within 24 hours of symptoms, have the most evidence.
